o.O How is Ravenclaw the emo house? I'd say that was Hufflepuff, if anything...or possibly Gryffindor is more emotional, courage being arguably driven by passion, but not Ravenclaw.

I love Ravenclaw dearly, it is my house after all, but there are a fair few outstanding Ravenclaw moments that make me wonder if another quality of the house is heightened "sensitivity".

I wouldn't call it a bad rap...that is, I don't think any of the houses are "emo" like with the silly haircuts and skinny jeans and whatnot. And they'd probably throw awesome parties, because no one would stiff on the collection! :D But the "loyal" trait just sticks in my mind as the most emotional, or emotionally aware, of the houses...or at least more emotionally aware than Ravenclaw! XD

LOL Oh just comments I see here and there sometimes. And they sort of get a bad break in the books at times too - but I love the Puffs!

Maybe emo is too strong, but the Ravenclaws we know a fair bit about are certainly NOT a logical bunch.

Cho Chang is a bit of a weepy mess. Michael Corner gets into a sulky snit over the results of a Quidditch match and breaks up with Ginny. The Gray Lady turns out to be a spoiled sulky brat who decides to spend the rest of her nonlife drifting around Hogwarts feeling not doing much. And Luna, though not emo, definitely operates on something of a different plane than everyone else and relies a great deal on particular beliefs and intuition and not necessarily logic.

Interesting point--but I'd argue that those are characters who serve a particular purpose in JKR's storyline and don't necessarily epitomize the traits of their house, in the same way that Crabbe and Goyle aren't very good examples of Slytherin cunning & ambition.

I also think it comes down to a matter of Spock himself--he's a Vulcan, not human, and no house at Hogwarts is going to describe his Vulcan logic because it's not a human trait. The closest Hogwarts can come is the knowledge-seeking Ravenclaw. Put another way: Kirk is constantly asking that Spock "elaborate" or "analyze." To which House would you turn with that question?

And then of course, there's the pon farr...so even if you think Ravenclaws are an emotional bunch, maybe Spock would fit in there after all! *giggles*

Point taken. They do indeed move the story forward; however, there are so few Ravenclaws who do anything in the story (unlike Slytherins and Gryffindors) it's hard to be able to say that these characters are or aren't very good examples of their houses.

I just don't see Spock's defining characteristic as his search for knowledge. He is indeed very smart and definitely curious about outer space (as is just about everyone in the federation), but I see his incredible bravery to the point of being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice at time or two as being far more definitive. This is why I would actually put him in Gryffindor.

Then again, maybe Hogwarts needs a 5th house - the house of pon farr!!!

Tell me about it! And what bugs me the most is that they're not even consistent with her own descriptions of the houses! How is Ernie Macmillan, who was one of the first to condemn Harry, an example of a loyal Hufflepuff? At the time, he was only a minor character, so at the least, I'd expect him to be a cardboard-cutout, two dimensional example of his House traits! Subtlety and not judging a book by its cover is one thing, but...

Why are there no intelligent Ravenclaws, and the two highest-scoring students are in Gryffindor and Slytherin?! *sigh*

I want to say Ravenclaw, because he is an intellectual, however, his kinship with Kirk (clearly a Gryffindor) indicates a strong sense of loyalty and justice. While he is industrious, I do not see him as a Puff, because he has a great deal of pride in himself. nor is he as devious or ambitious as is required by a Slytherin.

I'm going with Gryffindor, as I do believe, more often than not, he does value a sense of right and just over a sense of logic. Plus his feelings for Kirk, Uhura and the crew tend to overwhelm his logic.

Gryffindor of course, Spock is like Hermione, intelligent sure, but his bravery is sorely underestimated yet knows no bound, besides Kirk and McCoy would both be Gryffs so naturally Spock would be too, DUH!!!

Couldn't you also turn that the other way around, though? Like, personally I'd put McCoy in Hufflepuff, and say he's the opposite of Hermione's situation: yes, he's brave, just like Hermione's intelligent, but his underlying traits are really patience, determination, and compassion (remember when he saved mirror!Spock's life?)

I voted for Slytherin. He controls his emotions (like Snape and most Slytheris), he became a Federation captain and Ambassador (ambition), he figures out how to get around rules (cunning) as seen in his rescue of the disabled Captain Pike in "Menagerie", he sacrificed himself to save the Enterprise just as Severus spent his life to protect Harry, and he grew up scorned on Vulcan because he was a halfbreed among purebloods but eventually rose up (like Snape).

Although I think he could also be placed in Hufflepuff - he's tenacious and fiercely loyal.

I think Kirk's got more of the Slytherin twistiness under that Lion's pelt.

Kirk is a bit slippery. He's definitely extravagantly bold and wreckless, but he's also super cunning and resourceful. I'm honestly conflicted as to whether he's more Gryffindor or Slytherin.

McCoy, I would consider a Hufflepuf, along with Sulu and Checkhov. Scotty and Uhura have me a bit perplexed too.

I actually had a discussion about this with my dad, an impressive Trekkie, and we decided on Ravenclaw. The emo Claws we see in the books are probably just as emo as the rest of the students because, well, they're teenagers and they have human flaws. As Spock is only half human, he lacks many of those flaws and therefore can be the most ideal Ravenclaw possible, relying primarily on logic.

He does have some traits belonging to other houses, particularly Gryffindor, but I think in some ways that's the part of him that Kirk brings out, rather than what he would display independently. But yes, after Ravenclaw, Gryffindor would be an immediate second choice in my opinion.
