Wedding Dress Woes Resolved
Mar. 25th, 2007 07:32 pmA while back, I ordered what I thought would be my custom-made and fairly modest wedding dress on e-bay. The dress arrived a few weeks later looking exactly as it should but unfortunately turning out to be far, far too large for me despite the measurements I had sent in. The dressmaker agreed to take things in for me, and the night before I left for Sweden, my intended pinned me into the dress and took pictures to help her make the adjustments. He mailed it off to the dressmaker while I was in Sweden, and she assured me she'd have it back in a few weeks time.
I've no doubt she will.
Unfortunately, the moment I saw myself in the dress, I realized it wasn't right for me. It really was too much dress, and the miscalculation on the size had caused me a lot of concern. I just wasn't convinced that even after being taken in that the dress would actually fit properly and flatter my figure. Not only had I wasted a few hundred dollars and the dressmaker's time, but I was back to square one without something to wear for the wedding.
This afternoon, in an effort to revive myself after spending several hours reading an incredibly tedious article, I started poking around online for white dresses. By chance, I checked out the website for Macy's, the lone major department store left in Philly after the merger/dissolution of Strawbridge's and Lord & Taylor, and found a really simple but really lovely off-white dress that caught my eye. What made it particularly tantalizing was its empire waist, simplicity and black accent.
I showed the picture to my intended and he really liked it too, so we high-tailed it downtown to Macy's in the hopes that they had something in my size.
They did, and now I have my wedding dress, and a pair of sparkly kick-ass black high heels to go with it. I can't believe I'll be going completely strapless, but it really is a lovely dress. If you want a peek, it's behind the cut.

I, of course, will look a lot better in the dress than the silly model because I have much better posture. What the heck is up with that pose?! And before any of you get all worked up about the fact that my intended has seen me in the dress before the wedding, relax. Somebody had to help me zip the darned thing up!

And yes, I'll be wearing BLACK shoes under that dress!
I've no doubt she will.

Date: 2007-03-26 02:31 am (UTC)I actually managed to find my wedding dress on sale at Penney's (when it was still in the Gallery) for $50! It was a simple cream-colored dress (sort of a thirties style and tea-length) with a satin slip overlaid with cream lace on the bodice and skirt (which was pleated) and a cream-colored satin dropped waist, which I ornamented myself with some pearls sort of festooned around it (just a single strand, costume jewelry). I borrowed my mother's 25th anniversary pearls to wear with it and just wore a hairband with baby's breath attached to it by the florist for my hair decoration, along with some simple cream-colored lace-covered pumps that cost about $10 more than the dress. It really doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to do a wedding!

Your wedding dress sounds lovely and simple and elegant and affordable. I'm jealous of the price. This particular dress cost $340 and the shoes were $60, so I hope I do get the chance to wear it again. But as I've been looking at the cost of some of the more typical wedding dresses out there, I realize I got away with a fairly affordable dress. Some of those dresses are horrifically pricey.

Date: 2007-03-26 02:37 pm (UTC)Shannon, you're gonna be absolutely radiant! In my not-so-expert-but-nevertheless-artsy opinion, I think that the black and white will be wonderful for bringing out the lovely contrast between your dark hair and your fair complexion. Also, the shoes are to DIE for, dahling. :D

Hopefully you will also adopt a slip.
