I had a gorgeous weekend in Copenhagen with the lovely and gracious (and oh so Snape-a-licious) [livejournal.com profile] selinaenriquez. Saturday night saw me enjoying the gourmet cooking of her beau Jakob (and oh my God is he a good cook) while chatting with the two of them about research, language learning, Danish cooking and culture, and Snape (of course) and sipping A LOT of lovely, lovely wine.

I can only say that I very much hope to return the favor sometime in the near future when I'll have my own sweetheart (who is a marvelous cook) prepare a full Thanksgiving dinner for them.

After a lovely (wine-enhanced) night of rest, Selina and I strolled around a bit and then met up with Zille ([livejournal.com profile] thepinkrabbit) of Danish Snape Gang fame, which resulted in much Snape-tacular discussion. Zille also introduced me to a rather interesting theory that might lead to a plausible explanation as to why there seem to be so gosh darn many Snape-fans in Scandinavia. I unfortunately just missed meeting Heidi, the other half of the Danish Snape Gang, but I hope very much to run into her the next chance I get to hang out over here.

To amuse those of you with nothing better to do, here are a few snaps from my weekend in Copenhagen...

I'm dying to hear the theory explaining why there are so many Snape fans in Scandinavia! There seem to be so unfortunately few in Belgium :/. Sometimes I feel as if I hold the monopoly ;P.

It has something to do with parallels to Norse mythology, of which I am only very generally familiar, in particular the dark-haired, long-nosed and deceptive character of Loki. There seem to be a number of interesting parallels between Loki/Odin and Snape/Dumbledore.

They aren't completely parallel on every level, but there seems to be certain characters and themes throughout the HP series that echo similar roles and themes in Norse mythology. Whether this theory in fact accounts for the number of Snape fans over here, I'm not really sure. But it's an interesting idea.

Here is Loki in the Danish tv-series about Valhal, portrayed by my former friend Matrin Brygnann. He does look like Snape:

And here is Loki from the official Danish Valhal cartoon series. Again, strong resemblance to Snape:
