Title: The Director and the Actor
Characters Real People: [livejournal.com profile] drinkingcocoa's daughter (The Director), Benedict Cumberbatch
Rating: General
Notes: So remember all that whining in my last post about having so many ideas for art and not enough time to draw? Apparently, when there's enough inspiration, art happens anyway. Here's my first ever real person fanart which was inspired by this bit of nonsense by Benedict and many fun conversations with [livejournal.com profile] drinkingcocoa about her five-year-old daughter, nicknamed the Director, who, like Benedict, is also not a big fan of sitting on long boring flights. I started imagining them together on a flight and what they might get up to and suddenly found myself drawing this on my worknotes (hence the green scribble). And the title is very deliberate  - despite the age difference, it wouldn't be the famous guy who would be calling the shots.

I have seen this face in person and also managed to find a few reference photos on DC's LJ to help with it. She has a gift for throwing shade with a single glance.

Seeing the inked version is like getting a whole new drawing! I don't think I noticed before that he's wearing the Brooklyn t-shirt! Although to be honest, I'm not usually looking at him when I look at this picture. As usual, I'm helplessly lost to the little one. I didn't notice before that you'd put in the little keyhole from her cap sleeve. I'm still amazed at the overall shoulder strap detail. So true to five-year-old life. The inking emphasizes the seat belt and that really brings home the restricted feel. I can just sense that she's ten seconds away from taking over and telling the grownup a better way to spend his time, which he will do. Not impressed by fame.

Heh! Yes. It's funny how much inking (and then coloring) can be used to emphasize things. This is why I am always terrified of this transformation from sketch to final product because it can sometimes de-emphasize things that were so perfect in the original pencil sketch.

Yes, that keyhole cap sleeve was influenced by that ref photo, which was so perfect in many ways. I wanted to depict delicate girly flourishes alongside all the edgy girly flourishes (messy hair, messy clothes, spread legs and sticky-out feet that infringe on the space of others) that I see in the Director.

I think I would die of squee if the director ever met Benedict and had a chance to tell him what's what. In my imagination, that would be the best fairytale ever.

This is so fantastic on so many levels. Your ability to take material and transform it into your vision is the mark of a seasoned, maturing artist. And I love Director's face. LOL

Oh Fox, I had to step away and gather myself together for a moment. I think I am always stuck in the same place. Thank you.

She gives so much attitude. It was fun to try and capture this in her pose.
