Exactly like Sherlock in S1! I'm glad they sort of retconned that in S2, since it made me grit my teeth a bit. Maybe Skully will let me borrow the headphones for my next re-watch.
IIRC, in S1, the only violin-playing we got was noisemaking with the intent of annoying people. In S2, he actually played, which made me sigh with relief that they were expanding it beyond the throwaway gag in S1. So if you squint, it's a retcon. Otherwise, it's character development, though I don't think we're meant to believe that he learned the violin between ASiP and ASiB. :D
In the Conan Doyle stories Sherlock does both. He is an accomplished violinist. But he prefers generally to use his violin (a Stradivarius) to make noise of this type. But he, as seeming apology, plays Watsons favourite pieces for him nevertheless. Perhaps it is just that they only show him doing the former in season 1 though he is able to do both?
Yes, I know he plays in ACD. He also goes to concerts regularly, knows way more about music than his BBC counterpart, and composes, which is what Watson referred to as the noisemaking, not just carelessly squeaking the bow on the strings. That's why I found the noisemaking in S1 annoying, because I felt they were making a cute joke at the character's expense.
It's Lestrade I feel sorry for, I'm pretty sure he'd have to report every loss in order to get a new card made up- he's probably got a bit of a reputation for that.
