All this Cumbercrushing has sort of gotten in the way of drawing, but it does mean I've been able to scour the web looking for excellent reference photos for a piece that's been nibbling at the edges of my conscience ever since I first started reading [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01's A Cure for Boredom. Here's my progress so far along with a few dilemma's that I'm facing.

Part I This is from a scene in Chapter 1 that kicks off the whole story. Sherlock is sitting on the sofa in the dark with his feet tucked under him using John's laptop for nefarious purposes. Because there is a small pile of something on the floor (which I haven't drawn yet), I decided to eliminate the coffee table that is normally in front of the sofa.

Part II - Sherlock is described as sitting with his legs folded under him and the laptop balanced on one knee, so I've moved the laptop to the knee closest to John. However, I'm stuck for a good reference to depict someone sitting cross legged at this angle (which is driven by an awesome reference I found of John sitting on the sofa). So I'm torn about what to do here. Does anyone have a good reference of someone sitting cross-legged on a sofa at a similar angle? Or can I assume Sherlock repositioned himself once John sat next to him so that one or both legs is on the floor? Based on what comes later, it's possible that he did in fact move his legs at some point even though it's not explicitly stated. Moving the laptop also means I should probably move Sherlock's head since it's no longer looking in the right direction, but I'm planning to have Sherlock looking out of the corner of his eyes at John since he's not really watching the laptop anyway.

:D

How is it to see what images your words provoked in a reader's head and how these images do or don't map on to what you envisioned while writing?

I'm kind of curious to know whether you could see what color shirt John wearing and exactly which side of the sofa Sherlock was sitting on and whether the pile of something on the floor was to Sherlock's right or left? You don't need to say what you saw, but I'm dreadfully curious about what details were and were not already in your head.

Actually, what you've got here (and in the next version posted) is remarkably close to what was in my head. The pose is precisely what I'd pictured, even down to the way Sherlock is glancing sideways and John is leaning in a bit. Someone else did fanart of the two of them wanking to porn and she had them on opposite sides of the sofa, which really surprised me. And then someone else commented, "I'd imagined their positions on the sofa reversed" and I though, yes, exactly. I don't know if I said that explicitly in the fic, but this is basically exactly what was in my head.

I'm not sure about colors, to be honest. :-P
