How To Make Uhura More Awesome

I was so inspired by watching the Trek movie for the second time and by the discussion taking place over on kerryblaze's LJ, that I actually WROTE something. Consider these suggestions for modifying the movie script to make Uhura more awesome by letting her show off her mad xenolinguistic skillz.



Making Uhura More Awesome Part I

Sulu: *releases hand break*

Enterprise: *jumps to warp*

Pike: *demands review of most recent communication from near Vulcan*

Uhura: *happens to be passing through*

Lame Comm Guy: *plays single message*

Uhura: *overhears message*

Lame Comm Guy: *claims it’s just a distress call from Vulcan*

Uhura: * whips around so fast, her ponytail takes out random red shirt*

Spock: *raises eyebrow*

Uhura: *repeats message for bridge, demonstrating awesome xenolinguistic skillz*

Spock: *speaks fluent Vulcan and has no idea what she just said*

Uhura: *translates from Romulan to English the order to destroy all ships*

Pike: *sends lame comm. guy out to get him a sandwich*

Uhura: *is promoted*

Spock: *finds this logical*

Uhura: *gets busy translating*

Enterprise: *is saved!*

Making Uhura More Awesome Part II

Vulcan: *implodes fantabulously*

Spock: *is emotionally compromised but won't admit it*

Everyone: *is gobsmacked*

Spock: *gives command to join fleet in the Laurentian System*

Kirk: *gets in Spock's face*

Spock: *is logical*

Kirk: *chews some scenery*

Spock: *is still logical*

Uhura: *is frantically monitoring comm*

Kirk: *makes crack about Spock's mom*

Spock: *goes in for the kiss neck pinch*

Uhura: *interrupts slashy moment*

Kirk: *pouts*

Uhura: *reports on possible weaknesses of Romulan ship uncovered during Klingon engagement*

Spock: *is skeptical*

Uhura: *iz srs bzns*

Spock: *is convinced*

Spock Prime: *will have to be worked into the story some other way*

I was actually slightly annoyed about Uhura being this xenoling expert or whatever, because that was totally Hoshi's gig from Enterprise, and plus I never got that vibe off the Uhura in TOS. I mean, not that she shouldn't be awesome, or that it doesn't make sense to have your comms officer have this kind of talent, but... it's like, you'd done that already in this franchise, hello? *shrugs*

Spock: *goes in for the kiss

I know. I found it interesting that they gave her new skills that so closely resembled the particular skillset of a rather recent Trek character.

That neck pinch moment and the whole fight scene between Kirk and Spock was so very slashy!

LOL! I'm not a huge Uhura fan, but I could totally get behind this. XD Also:

Everything ultimately devolves back into K/S slash! EVERYTHING! I have PROOF!! (not that I'm complaining...*g* *snerk*)

Spock: I need everyone to continue performing admirably.

Uhura: Okay, then. I need, oh, an engineer, a machinist, and someone who's good with microcircuitry.

Spock: *eyebrow*

Uhura: Look, we've seen that beam, and we have the frequency. We know that besides working as a drill, it takes out communication and transporters. We have to assume they'll use it again, so it makes sense to see if we can put together a communication device that works some other way, at least for short messages or location, because with no communications, I can't perform admirably. Based on magnets, maybe. That's why I need an engineer.

Spock: ...First, I believe you've just demonstrated you can. Second, Mr Riley's area of expertise is alternate navigational systems which might be modified. Perhaps he and Mr Kyle--transporter systems--could assist you.

Uhura: Riley's a little flighty.

Spock: I am certain you will keep him in line. *meaningful eyebrow*

Uhura: That I will. Sir.
