I started watching Meghan's new Netflix series yesterday and am now four episodes in. I went in having read a lot of reviews and comments about it, most of them negative, so that colored my perspective. Specifically since these reviews and comments were by royal watchers and media that regularly hate on all things Meghan, I was positively predisposed to like the show.

This is not a show I can focus on but it does make for nice background while I am cooking and doing chores and cannot stare at the screen constantly. It is very pretty: the color, the fruit, Meghan's glowing skin, the decorations and food that she makes with guests, the view from the garden while she drinks tea with a friend. I have picked up one or two interesting tips I might use, but that is really not the point of the show. The show is about Meghan and it's clear that cooking and crafting with friends and guests provides a framework for Meghan to talk about her past and her life and to share the image of herself with the world that she wants to project. I see it as somewhat parallel to Harry's Spare, which was Harry sharing himself in written format.

Meghan is not revealing as much about herself as Harry did in his book. This makes sense because her show is not an autobiography but it is a kind of reality tv. However, unlike a lot of other reality TV that introduces viewers to a celebrity through drama and carefully engineered conflicts, it does so around the concept of friends, family, cooking, sharing gifts and memories. The drama is edited out. So far, not a word has been said about the British Royal Family or the British Press or anything negative. When Meghan talks of that time it is to reminisce about a fond memory like the flavor of her wedding cake, which is the same flavor as the cake she makes for a visiting friend.

This lack of drama makes sense because this show is also launching Meghan's cooking/lifestyle brand, so it also needs to set her up as a person whose goods you want to buy. Meghan is entering the same sphere as Gwyneth  Paltrow and other celebrities who have brands that they market along with their image. Altogether, the editing of the show, the colors and lighting are very attractive. I find the music overmuch sometimes, but that's my taste. I  am a more visual person and that's what I enjoy the most. Watching the second episode in particular made me want to eat more fruit and also have a picnic with friends in a garden soon.

I also had a revelation listening to Meghan speak with her guests and the filming crew, who she interacts with regularly as part of the show. She sounds like someone who would make a terrific elementary school teacher. The way she emotes, pauses, explains, and her very corny jokes match exactly with what I see in teacher candidates who love working with the young kids. I can understand why some people find this irritating, but it is a particular talent to be able to command the attention and interest of hoard of 28 6-year olds. This obviously won't appeal to all viewers and I think this is why I find her show soothing as background and not engaging enough for my full sustained attention.
